In The Black Hole, what is the name of the red robot who serves Dr. Hans Reinhardt?

The story behind the answer

In The Black Hole, the red robot who serves Dr. Hans Reinhardt is named Maximilian.

Maximilian is the intimidating, largely silent red robot aboard the USS Cygnus. He acts as Dr. Hans Reinhardt’s chief enforcer and is visually distinguished by his large circular body, spinning blades, and ominous presence. The character is one of the film’s most memorable mechanical creations even though he rarely speaks.

The 1979 Disney science-fiction film also features V.I.N.CENT., a floating medical robot voiced by Roddy McDowall, and Old B.O.B., another robot from the Cygnus. Those characters are easy to confuse because all three are prominent machines on the same spacecraft, but Maximilian is the red antagonist’s robot.

The film was directed by Gary Nelson and follows the crew of the USS Palomino after they discover the apparently abandoned Cygnus near a black hole. Its elaborate visual effects earned an Academy Award nomination.
