King Ahab wished to acquire Naboth’s vineyard. The vineyard stood near Ahab’s palace in Jezreel, and Ahab wanted to turn it into a vegetable garden.
According to 1 Kings 21, Naboth refused to sell or exchange the property because it was his ancestral inheritance. His refusal reflects the importance of inherited family land in ancient Israel, where property was not viewed simply as an ordinary commodity that a king could take at will.
Ahab’s wife, Jezebel, devised a scheme to obtain the vineyard. Using letters written in Ahab’s name, she arranged for Naboth to be falsely accused of cursing God and the king. Naboth was then executed, allowing Ahab to take possession of the land. The prophet Elijah condemned Ahab and Jezebel, making the episode a classic biblical story about royal abuse, false testimony, and the seizure of private property.
