Una Stubbs plays Mrs Hudson, the landlady at 221B Baker Street, in the BBC series Sherlock.
Stubbs appeared throughout Sherlock as Martha Louise Hudson, whose calm authority contrasts with Sherlock Holmes’s eccentric behaviour and John Watson’s practical concerns. The character is based on Mrs Hudson from Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Holmes stories.
Sherlock’s Mrs Hudson is more than a landlord. She regularly protects the detectives, challenges Sherlock when he is rude, and becomes part of the emotional centre of the flat. Her friendship with John and Sherlock helps make 221B feel like a home rather than merely a workplace.
A common mix-up is confusing Stubbs with Louise Brealey, who plays pathologist Molly Hooper. Stubbs had a long British television career before Sherlock, including appearances in Till Death Us Do Part and Worzel Gummidge.
