In the BBC series Sherlock, how many regular episodes are in each series?

The story behind the answer

Each regular series of the BBC television series Sherlock contains three episodes.

Sherlock was structured around feature-length installments rather than the much shorter episodes common in many television dramas. The first three series each contain three regular episodes, and series 4 follows the same three-episode pattern.

The programme also includes the special “The Abominable Bride,” which aired between series 3 and 4. Because that special is often counted alongside the regular episodes, people can confuse the series structure with the show’s overall episode total.

Each regular episode generally runs for roughly 85 to 90 minutes. This format allowed the writers to build individual stories around major Arthur Conan Doyle cases while maintaining continuing character and plot arcs.
