In the Assassin's Creed video-game series, what fictional device lets users relive genetic memories?

The story behind the answer

In the Assassin's Creed video-game series, the fictional device that lets users relive genetic memories is the Animus.

The Animus is a machine developed in the modern-day storyline by Abstergo Industries. It allows a person to access inherited memories encoded in their DNA, then experience those memories through a simulated historical environment. Desmond Miles is the first major character shown using it in the original games.

The Animus explains how the series moves between modern settings and historical periods without treating the historical sections as ordinary time travel. Later games show different versions of the technology, including portable systems and the Helix entertainment platform. A common mix-up is calling Eagle Vision the device; Eagle Vision is instead a special perception ability used by many characters.
