In the Assassin's Creed series, what company operates the Animus in the modern era?

Abstergo Industries operates the Animus in the modern-era storyline of Assassin's Creed.

Abstergo is a powerful multinational corporation secretly controlled by the Templar Order. Its public research includes pharmaceutical and technological work, while its hidden projects seek to locate Pieces of Eden and influence humanity's future. The company uses the Animus to explore genetic memories inherited through a person's ancestors.

In the first game, Desmond Miles is forced to use an Animus under the supervision of Abstergo employee Warren Vidic. The machine allows Abstergo to study Altaïr's memories, although Desmond eventually learns that the technology can also help the Assassins.

Abstergo is not the name of the machine itself: the Animus is the memory-exploration device, while Abstergo is the organization operating it. Later games depict different Abstergo divisions and modern protagonists.
