In The Adventures of Tintin, what is Captain Haddock’s first name?

The story behind the answer

In The Adventures of Tintin, Captain Haddock’s first name is Archibald.

Haddock is a sailor and one of Tintin’s closest companions. Belgian cartoonist Hergé introduced him in The Crab with the Golden Claws, which was serialized from 1940 to 1941. The character’s full name is commonly given as Captain Archibald Haddock.

Haddock is the captain of the merchant ship Karaboudjan when he first appears, although he is being manipulated by his crew and is struggling with alcoholism. Tintin helps him escape, beginning their long friendship. Haddock later becomes associated with Marlinspike Hall, his ancestral home.

Readers sometimes remember Haddock mainly through his elaborate insults, but his role develops considerably. He begins as a troubled, unreliable captain and becomes a brave, loyal adventurer. His first name is mentioned less often than his title and surname, which is why it can be easy to overlook.
