In the 2016 film Snowden, which actor portrays whistleblower Edward Snowden?

In the 2016 film Snowden, Joseph Gordon-Levitt portrays whistleblower Edward Snowden.

The film was directed by Oliver Stone and dramatizes Snowden’s decision to disclose classified United States surveillance programs to journalists. Gordon-Levitt plays Snowden across several stages of his career, from his early military ambitions to his work as an intelligence contractor.

The cast also includes Shailene Woodley as Lindsay Mills, Snowden’s girlfriend, and Zachary Quinto as journalist Glenn Greenwald. Those roles can cause confusion because both characters are central to the disclosure story, but neither portrays Snowden.

Snowden premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and was released theatrically in September 2016. The movie is a dramatization rather than a documentary, so some scenes and dialogue are shaped for narrative effect. The real Snowden became internationally known after the 2013 disclosures concerning surveillance programs operated by the National Security Agency.
