In the 2015 film "Mad Max: Fury Road," Hugh Keays-Byrne plays the villain Immortan Joe.
Immortan Joe is the tyrannical ruler of the Citadel, a fortress that controls scarce supplies of water, food, and fuel in the post-apocalyptic wasteland. He commands the War Boys and pursues Imperator Furiosa after she escapes with his five captive wives in the armored War Rig.
Keays-Byrne’s casting carries a notable connection to the franchise: he previously played Toecutter, the main antagonist in the original 1979 film "Mad Max." Although Tom Hardy replaced Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky, director George Miller brought Keays-Byrne back to portray a completely different villain.
The other listed names are associated with different roles. Tom Hardy plays Max, Nicholas Hoult plays the War Boy Nux, and George Miller directed the film. Keays-Byrne’s performance as the masked, respirator-dependent Joe helped define the film’s grotesque visual world. "Fury Road" was his final film role before his death in 2020.
