In the 2012 film "Skyfall," the former MI6 agent turned villain is Raoul Silva. Played by Javier Bardem, Silva is the film’s principal antagonist and a cyberterrorist seeking revenge against MI6 chief M, played by Judi Dench.
Silva was once known as Tiago Rodrigues and worked at Station H, the British intelligence station in Hong Kong. After hacking Chinese government files, he was traded to Chinese authorities by M in exchange for captured agents. He was tortured for five months, survived a suicide attempt, and escaped with severe facial injuries.
The character’s apparent capture is part of his larger plan: Silva uses Q’s attempt to decrypt his laptop to access MI6 systems and escape. He releases the identities of undercover agents, attacks a public inquiry involving M, and eventually follows Bond to Skyfall in Scotland.
A common mix-up is identifying Silva as a member of SPECTRE in the same way as classic Bond villains such as Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Silva is instead a former MI6 operative acting independently as a cyberterrorist. The film reveals that “Raoul Silva” is an adopted identity, while his birth name is Tiago Rodrigues.
