In the 2011 romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, Cal Weaver works as an accountant.
Cal, played by Steve Carell, is a middle-aged family man whose wife, Emily, asks for a divorce. After meeting the confident bachelor Jacob Palmer, played by Ryan Gosling, Cal receives advice on dating, clothes, and nightlife.
His ordinary accounting career contrasts with Jacob’s polished professional image and initially makes Cal feel invisible after the collapse of his marriage. The job is part of the film’s portrait of a suburban adult rebuilding his identity rather than simply pursuing a new romance.
The film was directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and written by Dan Fogelman. Its ensemble cast includes Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Kevin Bacon, and Marisa Tomei. The title’s three adjectives describe the emotional confusion experienced by several interconnected characters.
