Chris Evans plays Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). Rogers begins the film as a frail young Brooklyn man whose determination to serve during World War II matters more than his physical limitations.
After repeated rejection from military recruitment, Rogers is selected for the Strategic Scientific Reserve’s Super-Soldier program by Dr. Abraham Erskine. The experiment transforms him into Captain America, giving him enhanced strength, speed, stamina, and durability. Evans portrays both versions of the character, with visual effects and body doubles used to create Rogers’ pre-serum appearance.
The film follows Rogers as he fights Johann Schmidt, also known as the Red Skull, and leads the Howling Commandos against Hydra. His closest relationship is with his childhood friend Bucky Barnes, while Peggy Carter becomes an important ally and love interest.
Evans initially turned down the role several times before accepting Marvel’s multi-film contract. He later reprised Steve Rogers in The Avengers, three additional Captain America-era films, and other Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances. The character’s shield and heroic identity are often mistakenly associated with Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor.
