In Mamma Mia!, the story takes place on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi. The island is the home of Donna Sheridan’s hotel and the setting for Sophie’s wedding preparations and search for her biological father.
The name Kalokairi means “summer” in Greek, fitting the film’s sunny Mediterranean atmosphere. Although the island is fictional, many outdoor scenes were filmed on the real Greek island of Skopelos, with additional filming in Greece and at studios in the United Kingdom.
The 2008 film adapts the stage musical Mamma Mia!, which uses songs by the Swedish pop group ABBA. Meryl Streep plays Donna, Amanda Seyfried plays Sophie, and the possible fathers are played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård.
