In the 2007 video game Assassin's Creed, which Assassin does the player control during the Third Crusade?

The story behind the answer

In the 2007 video game Assassin's Creed, the player controls Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad during the Third Crusade.

Altaïr is introduced as a highly skilled Assassin whose rank is temporarily reduced after he breaks the Brotherhood's rules during a mission. His redemption requires him to investigate targets across several major cities in the Holy Land, including Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus.

The game uses the fictional Animus to let Desmond Miles experience Altaïr's genetic memories in the modern day. Altaïr's story is set mainly in 1191, amid the conflict commonly called the Third Crusade. Although later games feature different protagonists, Altaïr remains central to the series' mythology and receives a major historical role in Assassin's Creed Revelations.

His name is sometimes shortened to Altair, but the character's full canonical name is Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. The phrase Ibn-La'Ahad means “son of no one” in Arabic transliteration.
