In the 2007 game Assassin's Creed, which Assassin is the protagonist?

The story behind the answer

The protagonist of the 2007 game Assassin's Creed is Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

Altaïr is a Syrian Assassin operating during the Third Crusade, with the story primarily set in cities including Masyaf, Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus. At the beginning, he is a highly ranked Assassin whose failure during a mission leads to a major loss of status. His mentor, Al Mualim, orders him to complete a series of investigations and assassinations before restoring his rank.

The name Altaïr means “the flying one” in Arabic and is also the name of a star in the constellation Aquila. The character is sometimes confused with Ezio Auditore, who leads Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations. Altaïr also appears in later series lore, but the 2007 title remains his defining starring role.

The game introduced the modern historical-memory framework that became central to the franchise, linking Altaïr's medieval story with a contemporary storyline involving the Animus.
