In Chocolat, Vianne Rocher’s daughter is named Anouk. Vianne and Anouk arrive in a conservative French village, where Vianne opens a chocolate shop during Lent and changes the community’s habits and relationships.
Anouk is portrayed by Victoire Thivisol, while Juliette Binoche plays Vianne. The character’s imaginary friend, Pantoufle, reflects Anouk’s childhood perspective and becomes part of the film’s gentle magical-realism elements.
Lasse Hallström directed Chocolat, which adapts Joanne Harris’s 1999 novel. The film received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Binoche, and features Johnny Depp as the riverboat traveler Roux.
