In the 1997 film “Con Air,” the prison transport aircraft is named Jailbird.
Jailbird is a Fairchild C-123 Provider converted into a prison transport plane for the story. Cameron Poe boards it after serving an eight-year sentence, intending to return to Alabama and meet his young daughter Casey. The flight is transporting dangerous inmates, including Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom, Nathan “Diamond Dog” Jones, and Garland Greene.
The aircraft’s name is easy to confuse with “Con Air,” but the latter is the film’s title and a nickname associated with the real U.S. Marshals prisoner-transport system, not the aircraft’s individual name. In the movie, Jailbird becomes the setting for the hijacking and the convicts’ attempted escape.
The film used several C-123 aircraft and replicas during production. Although the story presents Jailbird as part of a prison-transfer operation, the real prisoner-transport system did not operate this particular aircraft type. The movie’s aircraft and dramatic flight scenes are therefore cinematic inventions built around a real law-enforcement concept.
