In the 1995 film Hackers, Crash Override’s real first name is Dade.
Dade Murphy is played by Jonny Lee Miller. After being arrested for causing a major stock-market disturbance as a child, he is forbidden from using computers until his eighteenth birthday. Once that restriction ends, he returns to online activity and adopts the handle Crash Override.
The film uses handles as part of its portrait of 1990s hacker identity. Other characters include Kate Libby, known as Acid Burn; Emmanuel Goldstein, known as Cereal Killer; and Eugene Belford, known as The Plague. Those names are fictional creations within the film rather than descriptions of real-world hackers.
Hackers premiered in 1995 and became a cult favorite despite its initial commercial performance. Its colorful depiction of bulletin boards, phone phreaking and virtual reality reflects popular ideas about the internet during the early public-web era, even when the technology is stylized for entertainment.
