In the 1993 film "Cliffhanger", what is the name of the mountain rescue ranger played by Sylvester Stallone?

The story behind the answer

In the 1993 film "Cliffhanger," Sylvester Stallone plays mountain rescue ranger Gabriel "Gabe" Walker. Gabe is an experienced climber whose failed attempt to save a colleague leaves him traumatized and briefly causes him to leave the rescue service.

At the beginning of the story, Gabe, Jessie Deighan, and Frank respond to an emergency in the Colorado Rockies. Gabe tries to save Sarah, the girlfriend of fellow ranger Hal Tucker, but her harness breaks loose and she falls to her death. Hal blames Gabe, intensifying Gabe’s guilt and creating the emotional conflict that drives his return to the mountains.

Eight months later, Gabe comes back to collect his belongings and persuade Jessie to leave with him. Instead, a distress call draws him into a robbery involving more than $100 million in uncirculated U.S. Treasury currency. The criminals force Gabe and Hal to locate scattered money cases across the frozen mountain range.

The name is sometimes shortened to Gabe Walker, but his full character name is Gabriel Walker. Frank, Jessie, and Hal Tucker are fellow rescue personnel or connected characters—not Stallone’s character. Renny Harlin directed the film, which became one of Stallone’s best-known mountain-set action movies.
