In the 1992 film Sneakers, what fictional company hires Martin Bishop’s security team?

In Sneakers (1992), the fictional company that hires Martin Bishop’s security team is Setec Astronomy.

Setec Astronomy appears to be an ordinary corporate client seeking help with a security problem. Bishop and his colleagues are asked to retrieve a mysterious device, but they gradually discover that the assignment is connected to a much larger struggle involving intelligence agencies, encryption, and control of information.

The company’s name is a visual joke: “Setec Astronomy” is an anagram of “No More Secrets.” That phrase also captures the film’s central concern. Sneakers was made at a time when computer security, surveillance, and cryptography were becoming increasingly familiar to mainstream audiences, and its plot treats information as a form of power.

Setec Astronomy should not be confused with the black box. Setec Astronomy is the fictional client organization, while the black box is the device sought by several competing parties. Robert Redford stars as Bishop, with Phil Alden Robinson directing.
