In the 1990 film The Hunt for Red October, the Soviet submarine commanded by Marko Ramius is the Red October.
The Red October is a fictional Typhoon-class ballistic-missile submarine equipped with a secretive magnetohydrodynamic propulsion system, known in the film as a “caterpillar drive.” Ramius secretly intends to defect to the United States, creating a tense pursuit involving Soviet naval forces and the American submarine USS Dallas.
The film is adapted from Tom Clancy’s 1984 novel The Hunt for Red October. Sean Connery plays Ramius, while Alec Baldwin plays CIA analyst Jack Ryan. The production used specially constructed sets and models rather than filming aboard an actual Typhoon-class submarine.
The Red October is sometimes confused with the real Soviet submarine K-19, another vessel associated with Cold War submarine fiction. However, K-19 is a separate real submarine and does not carry the fictional propulsion system featured in the film.
