In the 1987 romantic comedy The Princess Bride, which actor plays Inigo Montoya?

The story behind the answer

Mandy Patinkin plays Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride. Inigo is a Spanish fencing master who spends years searching for the six-fingered man who killed his father.

His quest produces one of the film’s most recognizable lines: “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” The character’s repeated declaration is a revenge vow, distinct from Westley’s repeated declaration of love to Buttercup.

Cary Elwes plays Westley, while André the Giant plays Fezzik and Wallace Shawn plays Vizzini. Those three performers are sometimes associated with Inigo because they form the memorable group traveling through much of the adventure, but Patinkin is the actor who portrays him.

The Princess Bride was released in 1987 and directed by Rob Reiner. William Goldman wrote the screenplay from his 1973 novel, blending romance, fantasy, adventure and comic dialogue.
