In the 1987 film 'RoboCop', the story is set in Detroit. The film presents a crime-ridden near-future version of the city, where police services have become entangled with the interests of the corporation Omni Consumer Products, or OCP.
Detroit's industrial identity and real-world economic struggles give the setting much of its atmosphere. OCP plans to replace the deteriorating city with a privately controlled redevelopment called Delta City, turning urban renewal into a satirical corporate project.
Peter Weller plays Alex Murphy, a Detroit police officer who is murdered by criminals and rebuilt by OCP as RoboCop. The city is therefore more than a backdrop: its violence, privatization, and institutional corruption shape Murphy's transformation and his search for justice.
Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles are all major American cities, but none is the story's named setting. Some scenes were filmed in Dallas, Texas, which can create another location-based mix-up.
