In the 1982 film "First Blood," Rambo is arrested in the town of Hope, Washington. The arrest begins the confrontation between John Rambo and local sheriff Will Teasle.
Rambo arrives in Hope on foot while trying to find his former Vietnam War friend Delmar Barry. Teasle views him as a suspicious drifter and escorts him out of town, warning him not to return. When Rambo attempts to come back, the sheriff arrests him and sends him to be processed by his deputies.
The deputies’ abuse triggers Rambo’s traumatic memories of torture in Vietnam. He overpowers them, escapes into the surrounding mountains, and launches the manhunt that drives the rest of the film. The town’s name also carries symbolic weight: it contrasts with Rambo’s alienation and the violence that follows.
First Blood was adapted from David Morrell’s 1972 novel, although the film changes several details, including the story’s ending. Sylvester Stallone plays Rambo, while Brian Dennehy portrays Teasle.
