In the 1976 film Rocky, Apollo Creed is the heavyweight champion who fights Rocky in Philadelphia.
Apollo Creed is a charismatic, undefeated champion modeled partly on the public image of Muhammad Ali. He needs a replacement opponent when the scheduled challenger withdraws because of injury. Creed selects Rocky Balboa, an unknown local fighter with the nickname “The Italian Stallion.”
Apollo initially expects an easy defense, but Rocky’s conditioning and resilience make the contest competitive. Rocky becomes the first opponent to last the full distance with Creed, although Apollo wins by split decision. Their first fight establishes a rivalry that becomes a friendship in later films.
Carl Weathers played Apollo Creed in four Rocky films. Apollo’s death in Rocky IV leads to the later Creed spin-off films, which follow his son Adonis. Apollo’s boxing legacy is therefore central to both the original series and its continuation.
