In the 1939 film, what color are Dorothy's slippers?
Answer
Ruby red
Answer
Ruby red
In the 1939 film, Dorothy’s slippers are ruby red.
The magical ruby slippers are worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale in MGM’s The Wizard of Oz. After Dorothy’s house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East, the slippers pass to Dorothy, and the Wicked Witch of the West tries repeatedly to seize them.
Their color differs from the source novel. In L. Frank Baum’s 1900 book, Dorothy wears Silver Shoes. The film changed them to ruby red so their color would stand out dramatically in the three-strip Technicolor process, one of the movie’s most celebrated visual features.
Gilbert Adrian, MGM’s chief costume designer, created the film footwear. Several pairs were made, using red dye, sequined fabric, and jeweled bows; surviving pairs are now major pieces of film memorabilia. The slippers’ power is also slightly different in popular memory: in the film, Dorothy returns home by clicking their heels together three times, while the book’s Silver Shoes have a different magical history and function.
