Answer
Cairn Terrier
In the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, Toto was played by Terry, a Cairn Terrier.
Terry was a female dog born in 1933 and trained by Hollywood animal handler Carl Spitz. She had already appeared in films before being cast as Dorothy Gale’s companion in The Wizard of Oz, but the role of Toto became her defining performance.
Terry performed many of her own stunts. During production, a Winkie guard accidentally stepped on her paw and injured it, temporarily affecting filming. Her performance helped make Toto one of the most memorable animal characters in classic American cinema.
The dog was credited as Terry rather than Toto, and the character’s name is sometimes mistaken for the performer’s name. Terry continued working after The Wizard of Oz and appeared in other films. Her breed is also sometimes confused with the West Highland White Terrier because both are small, shaggy terriers, but Terry was specifically a Cairn Terrier.
