In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, what historical period do the turtles travel to?

The story behind the answer

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, the turtles travel to feudal Japan.

The 1993 film uses a magical scepter to transport Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo from modern New York to Japan during a historical period of samurai and daimyo. Their journey begins when April O’Neil receives an antique object and becomes involved in a conflict involving a Japanese village and its rulers.

The movie is the third live-action feature in the original trilogy. Unlike the first two films, it replaces the previous film’s major villain focus with a time-travel adventure and historical setting. The turtles must help people in the past while trying to return home.

Feudal Japan is sometimes confused with the film’s modern New York scenes or with other TMNT stories involving ancient martial-arts traditions. The destination is not simply “the past”; it is specifically a version of feudal Japan.
