In Taylor Swift’s “august,” what kind of character narrates the song?

Taylor Swift’s “august” is narrated by an unnamed female character.

The narrator describes a brief summer romance with James, a 17-year-old boy who ultimately returns to his former lover, Betty. Her perspective gives the song its particular mixture of longing, uncertainty, and hindsight.

The character is not given a confirmed personal name in the song or Folklore’s official narrative. Some listeners use “Augustine” as a fan-associated label, but that is not the same as an official name established in the song’s credits or lyrics.

The narrator is one point of view in Folklore’s fictional love triangle. “cardigan” presents Betty’s perspective, while “betty” presents James’s. Treating the narrator as Betty or as a formally named character is therefore a common mistake.
