In Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games, which district is Katniss Everdeen from?

The story behind the answer

Katniss Everdeen is from District 12 in Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games.

District 12 is one of the poorest districts in Panem and is associated with coal mining. It lies in the Appalachian region of the former United States, according to the series’ fictional geography. Katniss supports her family by hunting illegally beyond the district’s fence.

Her home district is important to the story because its hardship shapes her resourcefulness and because the Capitol generally treats District 12 as politically insignificant. Katniss volunteers for the 74th Hunger Games after her younger sister, Prim, is selected.

Readers sometimes confuse District 12 with District 13, the supposedly destroyed district that becomes central later in the series. District 13 is linked to nuclear technology and rebellion, while District 12 is Katniss’s original home and the coal-producing district shown at the beginning.
