In Suzanne Collins’s Mockingjay, Katniss Everdeen’s sister is named Primrose.
Primrose Everdeen, usually called Prim, is Katniss’s younger sister and one of the central emotional influences in The Hunger Games trilogy. Katniss volunteers to enter the Hunger Games in place of Prim at the beginning of the series, making her protection a major motivation for Katniss’s actions.
Mockingjay is the third and final novel in Collins’s original trilogy. It was published in 2010 and depicts the rebellion against the Capitol spreading across Panem. Prim is training as a healer during the conflict, reflecting her compassion and medical interests.
Readers sometimes confuse Primrose with other important characters from the series, especially Rue, the young tribute from District 11, or Johanna Mason, a victor from District 7. Primrose is also the source of Katniss’s own name: “katniss” refers to an edible aquatic plant, while Primrose is a flower name. The sisters’ relationship gives the series much of its personal stakes.
