Arrietty is the tiny borrower who befriends Sho in Studio Ghibli’s The Secret World of Arrietty.
Arrietty belongs to a miniature family that secretly borrows small household items from the human residents of a country home. During her first borrowing expedition with her father, she is discovered by Sho, a human boy staying in the house before an operation.
The film is based on Mary Norton’s 1952 novel The Borrowers, but it relocates the story to modern Japan. Its Japanese title is Karigurashi no Arrietty, which can be translated as Arrietty the Borrower. Hiromasa Yonebayashi directed the film, which was released in Japan in 2010.
