Moro is the wolf goddess who raises San in Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke.
Moro is an enormous, ancient white wolf and the mother of two wolf cubs. She adopts San, a human girl abandoned by her parents, and San grows up defending the forest alongside Moro and the wolf pack. Moro’s intelligence and formidable presence make her one of the film’s major forest spirits.
Moro is distinct from Okkoto, the boar leader, and Nago, the boar god whose transformation helps begin Ashitaka’s journey. The name San means “three,” reflecting her place as the third child in Moro’s family rather than being a conventional human given name.
