In Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke, Lady Eboshi is the leader who commands Iron Town.
Lady Eboshi governs a settlement built around an ironworks, where residents produce iron by processing raw materials from the surrounding forest. Her industrial activities bring her into conflict with the forest’s animal gods and with San, the human girl raised by the wolf goddess Moro.
Eboshi is not presented as a one-dimensional villain. She gives refuge to people marginalized elsewhere, including former prostitutes and lepers, and she supports the community’s workers. At the same time, her expansion threatens the forest and contributes to the destruction of its sacred creatures.
The character’s name is sometimes confused with Toki, who helps organize the women working at the ironworks, or with San, the film’s title character. Lady Eboshi is voiced by Yūko Tanaka in the original Japanese version.
