In Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke, the boar god who becomes a demon is named Nago.
Nago is a powerful boar deity whose body is pierced by an iron projectile fired from Iron Town. The wound fills him with pain and hatred, transforming him into a rampaging demon. Ashitaka encounters Nago at the beginning of the film and is cursed when he kills the corrupted god.
Princess Mononoke was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and released in Japan in 1997. Its story presents a conflict among Iron Town, the forest gods, and the animals whose habitat is being destroyed. The film does not divide every character into simple heroes and villains; Lady Eboshi, for example, protects marginalized people while also threatening the forest.
Nago is sometimes confused with Okkoto, the older boar god who leads the final boar charge, or Moro, the wolf goddess who raises San.
