In Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbors the Yamadas, who created the original manga?

The story behind the answer

The original manga adapted into Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbors the Yamadas was created by Hisaichi Ishii.

Ishii wrote and illustrated the newspaper comic Nono-chan, which provided the source material for the film. The comic presents short observations about ordinary family life, and the film adapts that episodic spirit rather than following one continuous adventure plot.

Director Isao Takahata shaped the material into a series of comic and lyrical vignettes about the Yamada family. The characters include the parents Takashi and Matsuko, their children Noboru and Nonoko, and the grandmother Shige. Their everyday arguments, misunderstandings, and affectionate moments form the film’s structure.

The film is often remembered for its distinctive watercolor-like appearance. It was the first Studio Ghibli feature to use a digital watercolor technique extensively, giving the animation a loose, unfinished quality that matches the newspaper-strip origins. Ishii is sometimes mistaken for the film’s director, but Takahata directed the adaptation while Ishii supplied the original manga.
