In Studio Ghibli’s Kiki’s Delivery Service, Kiki’s black cat is named Jiji.
Jiji is Kiki’s companion during her year of independent training as a witch. In the original Japanese version, he is voiced by Rei Sakuma, while Phil Hartman provided his English voice in the 1998 Disney dub. Jiji commonly communicates with Kiki throughout much of the story.
A notable difference appears near the film’s ending. Kiki gradually loses the ability to understand Jiji’s speech as she matures and becomes more independent. The film leaves open whether Jiji has truly stopped speaking or whether Kiki simply no longer hears him in the same magical way.
Jiji is sometimes confused with other Studio Ghibli cats, especially Baron, the cat figurine from Whisper of the Heart, and Muta, the large white cat from The Cat Returns. Jiji is specifically Kiki’s small black cat and is one of the film’s most recognizable characters.
