Kiki is 13 years old when she begins her witch training in Studio Ghibli’s Kiki’s Delivery Service.
Following witch tradition, Kiki leaves home on the night of the full moon and spends a year living independently in a town that has no resident witch. She settles in the coastal city of Koriko and starts a delivery business using her broomstick and flying ability.
The age is occasionally misremembered because Kiki’s independence makes her seem older than a typical early teenager. The story focuses on learning practical responsibility, coping with loneliness, and regaining confidence after a period when she temporarily loses her ability to fly. The film was directed by Hayao Miyazaki and released in Japan in 1989.
