In Studio Ghibli’s Grave of the Fireflies, Seita’s younger sister is named Setsuko.
Setsuko is a young child who depends on her older brother Seita after their home is destroyed during the Second World War. The siblings attempt to survive independently, first staying with a relative and later living in an abandoned air-raid shelter. Their relationship is the emotional center of the film.
Grave of the Fireflies was written and directed by Isao Takahata and released in Japan in 1988. It was adapted from Akiyuki Nosaka’s semi-autobiographical 1967 novella. The story is set in Kobe during the final months of the war and portrays the consequences of bombing, displacement, hunger, and social isolation.
Setsuko is sometimes confused with Satsuki, the older sister in My Neighbor Totoro, or Taeko, the protagonist of Only Yesterday. Neither character appears in Grave of the Fireflies.
