In Studio Ghibli’s Arrietty, the human boy who discovers the Borrowers is named Shō.
Shō is a sickly boy who stays at his great-aunt’s house before undergoing heart surgery. While there, he notices Arrietty, a tiny Borrower who lives beneath the floorboards with her parents. Their meeting breaks the Borrowers’ rule that they must remain hidden from humans, but it also creates a cautious friendship based on mutual curiosity.
The 2010 film is based on Mary Norton’s 1952 novel The Borrowers. Hiromasa Yonebayashi directed it, making the film his feature-directing debut. The Japanese title is Karigurashi no Arrietty, while the English release generally uses Arrietty.
Shō’s name is easy to confuse with other Ghibli character names, especially Sōsuke from Ponyo. The characters have different stories and roles: Sōsuke is a young boy who befriends Ponyo, while Shō is the human teenager connected to Arrietty’s family.
