In Steven Spielberg’s The BFG, the young girl who befriends the giant is named Sophie.
Sophie is played by Ruby Barnhill in Spielberg’s 2016 fantasy film. She lives in an orphanage in London and discovers the giant during the night, when he takes her to Giant Country.
Unlike the other giants, the Big Friendly Giant refuses to eat humans. He collects and delivers dreams, and Sophie eventually helps him confront the larger giants who threaten children. Their friendship forms the emotional center of the story.
The film adapts Roald Dahl’s 1982 children’s novel The BFG. Mark Rylance provides the giant’s performance through motion-capture acting, while Penelope Wilton plays Queen Elizabeth II. The story combines Dahl’s invented language with a modern fairy-tale adventure.
