In Steven Spielberg’s 1975 film Jaws, Chief Brody’s first name is Martin.
Roy Scheider plays Martin Brody, the police chief of Amity Island, a fictional resort community threatened by a great white shark. Brody is new to the island and dislikes the water, making his responsibility for protecting beachgoers especially difficult.
The character’s full name is Martin Brody, and the film usually refers to him as Chief Brody. His cautious approach contrasts with Mayor Larry Vaughn’s concern about tourism and with oceanographer Matt Hooper’s scientific response to the shark attacks.
Jaws was adapted from Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel. The film became a major box-office success and is widely credited with helping establish the modern summer blockbuster. Scheider returned as Brody in the 1978 sequel, Jaws 2, although Spielberg did not direct that film.
