In Star Wars, what blessing does Obi-Wan Kenobi use when saying farewell?

The story behind the answer

In Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi uses the blessing “May the Force be with you.”

Obi-Wan says the phrase as he sends Luke Skywalker and Han Solo toward danger, presenting the Force as both a spiritual power and a source of courage. Alec Guinness plays the older Jedi mentor in the 1977 film, while Mark Hamill plays Luke.

The wording is a blessing rather than a description of the Force itself. It is sometimes shortened in conversation to “May the Force be with you,” but the phrase should not be confused with later variations such as “May the Force be with us.”

Star Wars was written and directed by George Lucas and released in 1977. It was later retitled Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope and became the first released film in the main Skywalker saga.
