In Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader hires the bounty-hunter droid IG-88 to help find the Millennium Falcon.
IG-88 is one of several bounty hunters summoned to the Star Destroyer Executor after the Millennium Falcon escapes the asteroid field. The droid has a tall, skeletal appearance and carries an extensive arsenal, making it visually distinct from the organic hunters in the same scene.
The film gives IG-88 only a brief appearance and no dialogue, but later Star Wars reference material expands the character’s background. The original trilogy scene also includes 4-LOM, Dengar, Bossk, and Boba Fett, which can make the identities easy to mix up.
IG-88 should not be confused with IG-11, a different assassin droid introduced decades later in the television series The Mandalorian.
