In Star Wars: Episode IV, the protocol droid fluent in over six million forms of communication is C-3PO.
C-3PO is a gold-colored humanoid protocol droid who travels with R2-D2 after their escape from the Tantive IV. His stated expertise covers etiquette, translation, and diplomacy, although his anxious personality often contrasts with his formal purpose.
Anthony Daniels portrayed C-3PO in the original trilogy and in many later Star Wars productions. The character was inspired partly by the mechanical figures of Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress, one of George Lucas’s acknowledged influences.
C-3PO and R2-D2 are frequently confused in short descriptions of Star Wars droids. R2-D2 is an astromech with a cylindrical body, while C-3PO is the human-shaped interpreter and protocol specialist.
