In Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, the astromech droid serving aboard Padmé Amidala’s starship is R2-D2.
R2-D2 travels with Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker during the film’s missions. He helps them on Naboo, Geonosis, and during the battle that follows the Separatist crisis. His technical abilities include repairing machinery, interfacing with computer systems, and assisting a starship crew despite his limited spoken language.
The film shows R2-D2 using built-in rockets to fly briefly, a capability not emphasised in every other Star Wars story. He also reunites with C-3PO, creating the comic pairing that later becomes central to the original trilogy.
R2-D2 is sometimes confused with other astromech droids because the series uses similar cylindrical designs and letter-number names. R5-D4 is the red astromech seen in the original film, while R2-Q5 is a black Imperial droid.
