In Star Trek, what is the faster-than-light propulsion system used by starships?

The story behind the answer

In Star Trek, the faster-than-light propulsion system used by starships is warp drive.

A warp drive lets a vessel travel faster than light by generating a warp field around the ship. The field changes the relationship between the ship and normal space, allowing fictional starships to cross interstellar distances without locally breaking the light-speed limit.

The drive is powered by a matter-antimatter reaction in many Federation designs. The resulting energy is channelled through warp coils, which create the warp field. Star Trek: Enterprise established that the NX-01 used a warp 5 engine, while later Federation ships reached higher warp factors.

Warp drive is different from impulse power, which uses conventional sublight propulsion for manoeuvring within a star system. It is also distinct from transwarp, a term used for more advanced methods that exceed ordinary warp performance. Although inspired by real theoretical physics, Star Trek’s warp system is fictional.
