In Star Trek: The Next Generation, what computer interface does the Enterprise-D use?

The story behind the answer

In Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Enterprise-D uses the LCARS computer interface.

LCARS stands for Library Computer Access and Retrieval System. It is the colorful, modular interface seen on wall panels, consoles, and handheld devices throughout the series. The design was created for the television production by scenic designer and illustrator Michael Okuda, whose work inspired the nickname “Okudagrams.”

LCARS is a user interface rather than a single computer or operating system. It presents commands, sensor data, communications, and ship controls through touch-sensitive panels. This distinction matters because viewers sometimes use “LCARS” as if it were the Enterprise’s entire computer system.

The interface became one of Star Trek’s most recognizable technology designs. Later Star Trek series adapted its visual language for new ships and eras, while real-world designers have also cited LCARS as an influence on futuristic interface concepts.
