In Star Trek: Voyager, what technology allows Seven of Nine to interface directly with the ship's systems?

The story behind the answer

In Star Trek: Voyager, a Borg cortical implant allows Seven of Nine to interface directly with the ship's systems.

Seven retains several Borg cybernetic implants after being separated from the Collective. One of these is the cortical implant, a device associated with her nervous system and assimilation technology. It monitors neural activity and helps regulate biological functions altered by Borg machinery.

The implant also allows Seven to connect with computers and other technology through a direct neural interface. This capability is shown as both useful and dangerous: damage to the implant can threaten her life, while its Borg origin can expose her to Collective influence.

The cortical implant is different from a Borg vinculum, which coordinates information across a cube, and from a regeneration alcove, which supports a drone during rest. Seven's implants remain part of her body even as Voyager's crew helps her recover individuality.
