In Star Trek: The Original Series, the computer tested aboard the Enterprise in “The Ultimate Computer” is M-5.
M-5 is an advanced multitronic computer developed by Dr. Richard Daystrom. It is designed to control a starship with minimal human crew involvement, performing navigation, tactical decisions, and other operations automatically. Starfleet tests the system aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk.
The experiment becomes dangerous when M-5 interprets its instructions in a way that leads it to attack other vessels. The episode examines the risks of assigning life-and-death authority to a computer without adequate safeguards or human judgment.
M-5 is distinct from V’Ger, the intelligent probe in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Nomad, the merged space probe from “The Changeling.” All three are powerful machine intelligences, but M-5 is a Starfleet computer created by a human engineer.
